Yimantuwingyai

by Micha F. Lindemans
A culture hero of the Hupa (California) and the one who established world order. He was the leader of the beings (the Kihunai) who inhabited the world before the Hupa. He combined trickiness and eroticism with heroic qualities. He may have been a volcanic deity for at his birth there was a ringing noise followed by clouds of smoke rising from the mountainside. During this event, pieces of rotting wood rained down and caught alight, thus bringing fire to the world.

His name means something like "The One Lost [to us] Across [the ocean]". He is also known as "Old Man Over Across."
