Contraction of Mattathias. The apostle and evangelist. Before he was called, he was a tax-collector at Capernaum. His gospel is the first of the New Testament. Its original is claimed to be Hebrew, or Syro-Chaldaic, or Palestine. The time of writing is placed at 60-66 CE.
