matakau
"Red-eyes." On the Moluccas (as well as in other parts of Indonesia), a matakau is an object that is hung in a fruit tree to prevent theft of the fruits. It is believed cause sickness or even death to the transgressor. These objects are often animal figures with red eyes to deter the would-be thief.
