Kai-n-Tiku-Aba

by Micha F. Lindemans
"The Tree of Many Branches". The sacred tree of Samoa. It grew on the back of Na Atibu, but a destructive man, called Koura-Abi, broke the tree down. With the tree broken, the people became violent and scattered all over the earth so that sorrow became their companion.

This myth is told by the people of Kiribati (the former Gilbert Islands) to explain the cause of their long migration from Samoa.
