Emese

by Pomona
She was the wife of chief Ügyek of the Hungarians, and in her dream she was impregnated by the Turul, which is a mythical beast (some think it is a huge falcon). In the dream she saw a stream from her breast, which probably meant the great number of her descendants. When she gave birth to her child, she gave him the name Álmos, which means "sleepy". Later, the seven most powerful chieftains ritually killed Álmos and elected his son Árpád to the rank of warlord of all the Hungarians. Árpád sealed the blood oath of the seven chieftain and successfully realized the conquest of the Carpathian Basin.
