Priests of the Phrygian goddess Cybele. They served the goddess by wild rituals that resulted in an exceptional state of ecstasy that went so far they they unmanned themselves. The cult spread through Greece and later also to Rome, where they were called Galli.

Plato was apparently the first to propose the idea that poets and, in particular, musicians could be possessed by ecstatic frenzy.
