Matsuri is a Shinto term that is difficult to translate. It may, according to the context, mean "festival," "worship," "celebration," "rite," or "prayer."

Savage or unruly kami who can be pacified and transformed by Shinto matsuri. They are referred to in the Kojiki, the oldest extant work of imperial mythology. See also magatsuhi-no-kami (evil kami).
